With Niantic having a tremendous success with the Pokemon GO AR Game, Niantic is making a new AR game, set in the Harry Potter world and titled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

So what is this game about?

Wizards Unite is an upcoming AR (Augmented Reality) game inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. The game is developed by a newly formed studio Portkey Games, an offshoot of WB Games San Francisco, in partnership with Niantic (Pokemon GO, Ingress).

Players will learn spells, explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.

It is confirmed that the game will feature several popular Harry Potter concepts:

  • Artifacts
  • Spells
  • Legendary Beasts
  • Iconic features

Techcrunch article states the following:

The app is now official, but the details are still scarce, with the launch timeframe of just sometime next year, but it sounds like there will be significant influence from the Niantic game Ingress, which allows players to roam the real world collecting power-ups, defending locations and exploring their environment.

This game marks Niantic’s first major project since Pokemon Go‘s own groundbreaking launch in 2016 and is likely to make use of some of the social features being developed through the company’s recent acquisition of the Evertoon development team.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is set to launch in 2018, co-developed by Warner Bros. Interactive and its new sub-brand Portkey Games.
